Irish Coffee

A genuine Irish Coffee from The Buena Vista.

We lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for several years, and one of our favorite spots was the Buena Vista, home of the Irish Coffee. If you are ever in San Francisco, stop by the Buena Vista to watch them make these; when it is busy, they will do 20+ at a time, and it is fun to watch. Here is the recipe, based on our many times watching them. (My husband is great at making these at home.)

Line up your glasses and follow each step down the line.

  • Pour hot water into the glass to warm it, then dump the water out. [We skip this step.]
  • Drop in two sugar cubes
  • Add coffee, about 3/4 full.
  • Stir until sugar is dissolved.
  • Add a shot of whiskey.
  • Top with freshly whipped whipping cream. Pour over a spoon and it will float on the top.

Here’s Andy, lining up the Irish Coffees.

I also recommend the official glassware. The drink looks beautiful in them!
